Step by step

How the Polish level test works

A placement test made by a certified Polish teacher: it checks the grammar and vocabulary of each level, one level at a time.

  1. Start with A1 Part 130 multiple-choice questions on everyday Polish: introducing yourself, numbers, nationalities, likes and dislikes.
  2. Go up one level at a timeScore 70% or more and the test moves you on to the next part: A1 Part 2, then A2, then B1. Each part is a bit harder than the one before.
  3. Stop where it gets hardNo pressure to finish everything. The part where you score under 70% shows where your Polish is right now.
  4. Get your result and your next stepYou see your score and the course that starts exactly at your level – so you don't pay for lessons you already know.

What your score means – and where to start

The first part where you score under 70% is the course to start with.

Under 70% in A1 Part 1

Start with A1 Part 1

You know a few words, but the basics aren't there yet. Part 1 starts from zero and builds them step by step.

A1 Polish course – Part 1

Passed A1 Part 1, under 70% in A1 Part 2

Start with A1 Part 2

You have the first half of A1. Part 2 completes the level, so you can handle simple everyday situations.

A1 Polish course – Part 2

Passed A1, under 70% in A2

Start with A2

Your A1 is solid. A2 builds on it with new grammar, much more vocabulary and longer conversations.

A2 Polish course

Passed A2

Start with B1

You're ready for intermediate Polish – the level of the B1 Polish State Exam.

Language levels

What A1, A2 and B1 mean in Polish

The test uses the CEFR levels – the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is the scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (fluent) used by language schools across Europe and by the official Polish exams.

A1 – Beginner

You can introduce yourself, say where you are from, count, shop for simple things and ask basic questions.

What you need to know at A1

A2 – Upper beginner

You can talk about the past and your plans, describe your day, and deal with the doctor, the post office or a landlord.

What you need to know at A2

B1 – Intermediate

You can share opinions, follow longer conversations and handle most everyday situations in Poland.

Three questions from the test

Real questions from A1 Part 1. Pick your answer, then open the box to check.

– ____ jesteś? – Jestem we Wrocławiu. (Skąd / Gdzie / Dokąd)

Gdzie – "Where are you? I'm in Wrocław." Skąd means "where from" and dokąd means "where to".

Mam 23 ___, a moja mama ma 42 ___.

lata / lata – after numbers ending in 2, 3 or 4 (except 12–14) Polish uses lata: "I am 23 and my mum is 42."

Świetnie mówię ___, ale nie znam ___.

po angielsku / języka niemieckiego – "I speak English very well, but I don't know German." After nie znam the noun goes into the genitive case.

FAQ

Questions about the Polish level test

Is the Polish level test really free?

Yes, the test is 100% free. You only type your name and email before you start – no account, no payment – and you see your result right after the last question.

How long does the Polish level test take?

Each part has 30 multiple-choice questions and takes about 10 minutes. If you go through all four parts (A1 Part 1, A1 Part 2, A2 and B1), plan around 40 minutes.

Which levels does the test check?

A1, A2 and B1 on the CEFR scale (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) – from complete beginner to the intermediate level of the B1 Polish State Exam.

How does the test know my level?

You start with A1 Part 1. If you score at least 70%, the next part starts: A1 Part 2, then A2, then B1. The part where you score under 70% shows where your Polish is right now – and which course to start.

Is this an official Polish language certificate?

No. It's a placement test to help you choose where to start learning. It doesn't give you a certificate and it isn't the official State Exam – but it shows you clearly how far you are from B1. Read more about the road to the B1 Polish exam.

Can I use it to check if I'm ready for B1?

Yes, as a first check. If you pass the A2 part with 70% or more, you are ready to start the B1 Polish course. If you don't pass it yet, the A2 course fills the gaps first.

I'm a complete beginner. Should I take the test?

You don't need to. If you don't speak any Polish yet, start straight with the A1 Polish course – Part 1: it begins with the alphabet and takes you to your first conversations.

What should I do after the test?

Start the course for your level: A1 Part 1, A1 Part 2, A2 or B1. Every course is self-paced, with a one-time payment and a 14-day money-back guarantee. You can compare them all on the Polish courses page.
