Polish Tutor, Online Classes or a Course? An Honest Comparison by a Polish Teacher
“Should I book a Polish tutor, join online Polish classes, or buy an online course?” I hear this question all the time. I am a certified Polish teacher with more than 10 years of experience, and today I make self-paced video courses – so I have seen both ways of learning up close. Both work, but for different people. Here is how to choose in five minutes.
In short
Choose a tutor if live conversation is your main goal and your budget allows regular lessons. Online group classes sit in between: cheaper per hour, but less speaking time for you. Choose a structured online course if you want a clear path through the grammar and vocabulary of each level, at your own pace, for a one-time price. Want corrections too? A course with teacher feedback, like my VIP plan, covers most of what a tutor gives you – except live calls.
Tutor vs online course at a glance
A Polish tutor
- Live conversation in every lesson
- Lessons shaped around your questions
- A booked time keeps you going
- You pay for every lesson, for as long as you learn
- It can take a few tries to find the right tutor
- Needs a good connection and a fixed time
My online course
- A clear path from A1 to B1, step by step
- One payment, lifetime access
- Learn anytime – even offline in the app
- VIP: a teacher corrects your speaking and writing
- No live video calls
What a Polish tutor gives you
An online Polish tutor is a person you meet live, usually on a video call, for 45–60 minutes. You can find tutors on tutoring platforms such as Preply or italki, through language schools, or by recommendation – and if you were searching for a “Polish tutor near me”: online lessons work from anywhere, so you are not limited to teachers in your city. The big strength is live conversation: you speak, the teacher answers, and you get used to real-time Polish. A good tutor also adapts each lesson to you – your job, your trip, your Polish partner’s family.
The things to keep in mind:
- Finding the right tutor can take several tries. I know this from my own learning: when I was learning Italian and Russian, it took me several tries before I found the right tutor. It often takes a few trial lessons with different tutors before you find one whose teaching style, level and schedule really fit you. Every trial costs time and money, and every new tutor starts again by getting to know your level – so the first weeks can go into searching instead of learning. With a course, you can see the full curriculum – every module and topic – before you pay, and you start learning on day one.
- The cost keeps going. You pay for every lesson, for as long as you learn.
- The plan depends on the tutor. Some tutors follow a clear course book from A1 to B1; others mainly chat. It is worth asking how they will take you through the levels.
- Scheduling. Time zones, travel and busy weeks can make regular lessons hard.
- We are all human. A tutor can get sick, a lesson gets cancelled and a week is lost; some days a teacher simply has less energy, and sometimes the chemistry between you just isn’t there. That is completely normal – but it means your progress depends on another person’s day. A recorded lesson is the same, well-prepared lesson every time, whether you watch it at 6 a.m. or at midnight.
Online Polish classes in a group
Many language schools also offer online Polish classes in small groups, often with a fixed schedule over a term.
- Usually cheaper per hour than private lessons, and more social – you meet other learners.
- Less speaking time for you: the lesson is shared between everyone in the group.
- The group sets the pace. If you miss a week, or the group moves too fast or too slow, it is hard to adjust.
What a self-paced online course gives you
A self-paced online course – Polish lessons online that you watch whenever you like – is a complete program you follow on your own: video lessons, exercises and materials, built level by level.
- Structure. Everything comes in the right order – first the sounds and basic sentences, then the cases and verbs, step by step towards B1. You never wonder “what should I learn next?”.
- Made for English speakers. In my A1 and A2 courses every new concept is explained clearly in English before you practise it in Polish – Polish lessons for adults, built for people learning it as a foreign language.
- Your pace, your time. Learn at 6 a.m. or 11 p.m., repeat a lesson five times, skip what you already know.
- Learn anywhere – even without internet. With my courses you get the mobile app for Android and iPhone: download the lessons on WiFi and watch them offline – on a plane, on the train or on holiday, just like your favourite Netflix series.
- One price. You pay once and keep the lessons, instead of paying per hour.
The honest limit: in a course without a teacher, nobody corrects your mistakes – which is exactly why I created the VIP plan (more on that below).
Conversational Polish: what actually gets you speaking
Many people look for “conversational Polish classes” because they want to speak, not study grammar. That makes sense – but in Polish, speaking freely needs a base first: the cases change the endings of words, and verbs change with every person. Without that base, conversation classes quickly turn into the teacher explaining grammar anyway.
What works best in my experience: learn the basics in a structured way, say every sentence out loud from the first lesson, and add live conversation as soon as you can introduce yourself and talk about your day – roughly from the A1 level. My courses are built that way: every new concept goes straight into active speaking practice, there are voice exercises to record, and with VIP a teacher listens to your recordings and corrects them.
Cost: what you actually pay
*Prices seen on the big tutoring platforms in October 2026 – always check the current rates. Tutoring marketplaces usually keep a commission from each lesson, so part of what you pay goes to the platform rather than to the teacher.
What the same money gets you:
| My course (one payment) | What you get | Same money with a tutor at ~€25 |
|---|---|---|
| A1 Part 1 – VIP €197 | 86 lessons (22 hours of video), 155+ exercises, 6 months of teacher feedback, offline app, lifetime access | about 8 lessons |
| Whole A1 (Part 1 + 2) – VIP €307 | 34 hours of video, 229+ exercises, 6 months of teacher feedback, offline app, lifetime access | about 12 lessons |
| Zero to B1 bundle – Master €587 | 78 hours of video, 619+ exercises, offline app, lifetime access | about 23 lessons |
Most plans can also be paid in 3 monthly instalments, and every course has a 14-day money-back guarantee. All courses and prices are on the Polish courses page.
“But a course can’t correct me…” – what VIP adds
This is the most common worry, and a fair one. So my VIP plan adds a real teacher to the course:
- 6 months of teacher feedback on the course’s voice and written exercises. You submit your work, get corrections, understand your mistakes – and actually sound correct. In A1 Part 1 that is 12 voice and 28 written exercises; in B1, 20 voice and 38 written exercises.
- A private Telegram group for life, where a teacher answers your questions by the next working day.
- Everything in Basic: the full video course, interactive exercises after the lessons, revision materials and the offline mobile app.
With Basic you get the full course too, and you can ask questions in the comments under every lesson or by email – you just don’t get individual feedback on your speaking and writing. What neither plan includes: live video calls.

Which one is right for you?
Tap the one that sounds like you:
🌱 I’m a complete beginner
Start with a structured course. The first months are about sounds, basic grammar and core vocabulary – things a course explains clearly and lets you repeat as often as you need. My A1 Polish course – Part 1 is a set of online Polish lessons for beginners that starts from zero.
❤️ I have a Polish partner
A course for the structure, and your partner for daily conversation – the perfect pair. See my A1 course for people with a Polish partner.
🏠 I live in Poland
A course gets you through A1 and A2 quickly and for a one-time price, and everyday life gives you the speaking practice. See the A1 course for people living in Poland.
🎓 I’m preparing for the B1 exam
You need the full B1 material in exam format and lots of corrected writing and speaking. A course with teacher feedback covers that; a tutor can add speaking practice in the last weeks. Read my road to the B1 Polish exam.
💬 I already speak some Polish and just want to chat
Then a tutor or a conversation partner is the better choice. If you are not sure your grammar is solid enough, take my free Polish level test first – it shows exactly where you are.
The best of both: combine them
The learners I see progress fastest use a course as the backbone and add speaking on top. The course gives you the grammar and vocabulary in the right order; a tutor, a language exchange or your Polish friends give you the conversation. Your tutor lessons become better value too: you don’t pay a tutor to explain the basics – you use the lesson to speak.
Choosing a tutor? 4 quick tips
- Book a trial lesson first and see if you like the teaching style.
- Ask about the plan: which levels (A1, A2, B1) and which materials will you follow?
- Ask about experience with learners like you – beginners, heritage learners or exam students.
- Agree on homework, so you don’t only learn during the lesson.
So, what is the best way to learn Polish?
There is no wrong choice – only one that doesn’t fit your goal or budget. For most English speakers and adults who want to learn Polish online, at home, the best way to learn Polish is a structured course plus regular speaking practice. If you want a clear path from zero to B1 at your own pace, a structured course is the smart start, and VIP adds a teacher’s feedback on top. If live conversation is what you need most, find a good tutor – and maybe use a course alongside, so your lessons go further.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Polish tutor better than an online course?
Neither is better for everyone. A tutor is the best way to practise live conversation and get instant answers. A structured online course is usually the cheaper and clearer way to learn the grammar and vocabulary of each level in the right order. Many learners do best with a course as the backbone and some speaking practice on top.
How much does a Polish tutor cost?
It varies a lot. On tutoring platforms such as Preply or italki, Polish lessons start from around €10, and many experienced tutors charge roughly €20–40 per lesson (prices seen in October 2026 – check the platform for current rates). One lesson a week at around €25 adds up to about €1,300 a year.
Can I learn Polish without a tutor?
Yes – many people reach A1, A2 and even B1 with a good self-paced course, as long as they study regularly and practise speaking out loud. What you miss without a teacher is correction. That is why my VIP plan includes 6 months of feedback from a teacher on your voice and written exercises.
Private Polish lessons or group classes – which is better?
Private lessons give you all the speaking time and a teacher focused only on you. Group classes are usually cheaper per hour and more social, but you share the speaking time and follow the group's pace. If what you need most is the grammar and vocabulary in the right order, a self-paced course gives you that at your own pace.
What are conversational Polish classes?
Lessons focused on speaking rather than grammar: you practise real conversations with a teacher or a group. They work best once you know the basics, roughly from A1 upwards. Before that, a structured beginner course gets you to your first conversations much faster.
Are your courses made for English speakers?
Yes. In my A1 and A2 courses every new concept is explained clearly in English before you practise it in Polish – they are made for adults learning Polish as a foreign language. The B1 course is taught 100% in Polish, as preparation for the B1 exam.
What is the best way to learn Polish as an adult?
In my experience: a structured course for the grammar and vocabulary of each level, a little practice every day and regular speaking – with a tutor, a conversation class or Polish friends. Adults learn best when they understand why something works, not only by repeating it.
What does the VIP plan include?
Everything in Basic (the full video course, exercises, resources and the offline app) plus 6 months of real teacher feedback on the course's voice and written exercises, and lifetime access to a private Telegram group where a teacher answers your questions by the next working day. In A1 Part 1, for example, that is 12 voice and 28 written exercises checked by a teacher.
Is there live speaking practice in your courses?
No – there are no live video calls. You practise speaking with the voice exercises (checked by a teacher in VIP), the audio sentences and the dialogues in the lessons. If live conversation is your main goal, combine the course with a conversation partner or a tutor.
Which is better for the B1 Polish exam?
For the exam you need the full B1 material in exam format and plenty of writing and speaking practice with corrections. My B1 course follows the exam format and ends with a mock exam, and VIP adds teacher feedback on 20 voice and 38 written exercises. A tutor can help on top with speaking practice in the last weeks.
A structured path with a teacher by your side
Learn Polish step by step – from A1 to B1
